The Helmut Hamann Scholarship Fund is primarily focused to provide financial support to future culinarians who show outstanding passion, dedication and skills while they are honing their craft at culinary school.

 

International Chefs' Association / ACF Big Apple Chapter is proud to be a part of this foundation as an administrator. We dedicate this page to share with our members, guests and prospective members about the foundation's founding member, Helmut Hamann, and the beneficiaries of his generosity.

Helmut N. Hamann (June 15, 1935 - March 25, 2013)

Helmut was born in Philadelphia, PA and raised and educated in Hamburg, Germany.  He was drafted in the Armed Forces and served as cook for 2 years.  After his tour of duty he returned to Germany for two years to gain more experience in continental cooking.  After his return to the USA he worked his way up to become Executive Chef in very notable establishments.

 

Helmut enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a chef (CEC, AAC) and received many medals and distinguished awards for his excellence and accomplishments in the Culinary field.  His expertise was much sought after and he was a member of many prestigious organizations.

 

He was President of the International Chefs Association / American Culinary Federation Big Apple Chapter for twelve years, and founder and manager of the New York Olympic Team (1984 to 2006), which competed every four years in Germany.  He was an active member of the Les Amis d'Escoffier Society of New York, Member of The American Academy of Chefs, Chefs de Cuisine Association of America, The Honorable Order of the Golden Toque, The International Geneva Association and The Food & Beverage Association of America.  After his retirement Chef Helmut was still active with many professional associations, participated in charitable events, and judged numerous culinary shows.

 

The ICA/ACF Big Apple Chapter established the Helmut Hamann Scholarship Fund for his hard work and dedication. Helmut's name and legacy will continue. Helmut loved to spend time with his grandchildren and nieces and nephews, most especially making candy houses at Christmas and sugar cookies.  He also enjoyed traveling so he and his wife Edith journeyed all over the world.  Helmut was a warm and friendly man who was ready, willing and able to help anyone in need, most especially when food was involved. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
